Window film guide

Window graphics come in several types of film, and choosing the wrong one can mean a graphic that blocks the view, peels too early or will not come off. This guide explains the main window films and what each is good for.

The main types of window film

Cut vinyl

Letters and logos cut from coloured vinyl with no background. Clean and professional; ideal for trading hours, names and phone numbers. Needs vector artwork.

Printed vinyl (opaque)

Full-colour graphics on white vinyl. Bright and solid, but you cannot see through it. Good for promotions and covering areas you want hidden.

Printed clear vinyl

Full-colour print on clear film, so the glass shows through where there is no ink. Useful for lighter graphics.

One-way vision (perforated vinyl)

Printed vinyl full of tiny holes. From outside you see the image; from inside you can still see out. Popular for shop windows and vehicle rear windows. It works most effectively when the outside is brighter than the inside.

Frosted film

Mimics etched glass for privacy, while letting light through. Can be cut into bands, logos and patterns. See frosted window film.

Removable films

Lower-tack films designed to come off cleanly after a short campaign.

Inside or outside the glass?

  • Applied outside – reads directly; exposed to weather and cleaning.
  • Reverse-applied inside – printed in mirror image and applied to the inside, so it reads correctly from outside and is protected. Good for long-term graphics on street-facing windows.

Double-sided messages, readable from both inside and out, are possible with layered prints.

Matching film to purpose

  • Trading hours and contact details: cut vinyl.
  • Bold promotion, short-term: removable printed vinyl.
  • Branding while keeping the view out: one-way vision.
  • Privacy for offices and treatment rooms: frosted film.
  • Glass door safety marking: frosted or printed bands at eye level.
  • Long-term street-facing branding: reverse-applied print or cut vinyl.

Tips before you order

  • Measure the visible glass inside the frame for each pane.
  • Check centre or landlord rules for shopfront windows.
  • Do not cover every window if you want customers to see inside.
  • Avoid strong cleaners and scrapers on vinyl and film.

Frequently asked questions

Can people inside see out through one-way vision vinyl?
Yes, especially when it is brighter outside than inside. At night with lights on inside, the effect can reverse.
Which window film suits privacy?
Frosted film gives privacy while still letting in light.
Will window film damage my glass?
Properly applied vinyl and film can be removed from glass. Removal should be done carefully to avoid scratching.
