Artwork guidelines

Good artwork is the quickest way to a good sign. These guidelines explain which files to send, how to set them up and what happens when your file is checked. If you are unsure about any of it, send what you have and we will tell you what is needed.

Preferred file types

  • PDF saved with fonts embedded or outlined – the safest choice for most jobs.
  • AI, EPS or SVG vector files – ideal for logos, cut vinyl, 3D letters and anything routed or laser cut.
  • High-resolution JPG, PNG or TIFF – fine for photographic prints, posters and canvas when the resolution is high enough.

Word documents, PowerPoint slides and images copied from websites or social media are usually too low in quality for signage. Send them as a reference and we can advise.

Vector logos matter for signage

Cut vinyl lettering, 3D letters, channel letters and anything routed from ACP or perspex must be made from vector shapes, because the machines follow the lines in the file. A pixel-based logo cannot be cut cleanly. If you only have a JPG of your logo, ask about redrawing it before you order. Our guide to vector artwork for signage explains why.

Size, resolution and bleed

  • Set the document to the finished size, or to scale (for example 1:10) for very large items. Tell us the scale.
  • For printed images, aim for enough resolution at final size. Large items viewed from a distance need less resolution than a business card held in the hand.
  • Add bleed (artwork extended past the trim edge) on printed items, and keep text and logos inside a safe margin away from edges, eyelets and pole pockets.
  • Convert text to outlines or embed fonts so nothing changes when we open your file.

Colour

Supply files in CMYK where possible. Screens show colour differently from printed vinyl, banner material or board, so expect small differences. If you need to match a brand colour closely, give us the Pantone reference and mention it with your order.

Backlit items such as light boxes look different when lit, so let us know when artwork is for an illuminated sign.

Proofs and approval

We check every file before production. If something will not print well, such as low resolution, text too close to the edge or missing fonts, we will tell you. For custom work you will receive a proof to approve. Production starts only once the proof is approved and payment is in, so please check spelling, numbers and contact details carefully. Frequently asked questions

Can you work from my JPG logo?
For printed items, often yes if the resolution is good. For cut vinyl, 3D letters or routed signs we need a vector file, and a JPG logo may need redrawing first.
What resolution do I need for a banner?
Banners are viewed from further away than print in the hand, so the required resolution is lower. Send the file and we will check it at final size before printing.
Do you check artwork before printing?
Yes. Every file is checked and you approve a proof for custom work before production starts.
